FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz., October 10, 2024 – The Bullhead City Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into an officer-involved shooting incident that unfolded in Lake Havasu City.
On October 9, at approximately 11 a.m., two Lake Havasu City Police detectives were in the desert area near Craggy Wash. They were following up on a missing person case from Coconino County and had received tips suggesting the missing person's vehicle was in that vicinity.
On reaching the location, a man unexpectedly opened fire from inside the missing person’s truck. The detectives took immediate cover behind their own vehicle, returning fire. The man in the truck then drove toward the detectives at high speed, ramming into their police vehicle.
The detectives continued to retaliate, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Patrick Neal Champion, 61, who was not the missing person under investigation.
The detectives were unharmed by the gunfire but were transported to the hospital for injuries sustained from the vehicle collision. They have since been discharged.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing and is being handled by an outside agency, in keeping with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The involved detectives are currently on administrative leave, which is customary in such incidents.
Concurrently, the search for the missing person is ongoing and is being led by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
