UTAH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL PERFORMS AT MHS THURSDAY,
INCLUDES MHS GRADUATE

BULLHEAD CITY – The world-renowned Utah Shakespeare Festival will hold a free performance of The Tempest in Bullhead City on Thursday evening (February 15) as part of a six-state regional tour.  One of the actors is 2014 Mohave High School graduate Tony Sloan, the son of Mohave High teacher Dirk Sloan and Needles High School teacher Jane Sloan.
Thursday’s performance at 6:00 pm (Arizona time) is open to the public.  It will be in the Mohave High auditorium and follows three workshops for students and teachers that afternoon focusing on stage combat, developing characters through improvisation and acting.
Both the free public performance and the student workshops are underwritten by a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant through the U.S. Department of Education.
The Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Bullhead City stop is part of the Shakespeare-in-the-Schools touring production.   When the tour wraps up in April, the Festival will have taken its production of The Tempest to more than 25,000 students in six western states. The tour is spending fourteen weeks on the road visiting schools, community centers, and correctional facilities in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado and Idaho.  Over sixty-seven of the performances will be for students in more than 120 schools. Also included is a fifteen-minute post-show discussion with the actors.
Sloan was president of Mohave High’s drama club before attending Southern Utah University in Cedar City, which is the home base of the Utah Shakespeare Festival.  The Festival has received Tony and Emmy Awards for Outstanding Regional Theatre (2000) and a live televised production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2011).  At Mohave, he was the lead in “The Diviners,” and a supporting lead in “South Pacific.”
Additional information about Thursday’s free performance is available by calling Mohave High at 928-758-3916, ext-1247.  Information about the Utah Shakespeare Festival is online at www.bard.org.
