Students visit Dr. Teddy Bear and the Hospital
Fort Mohave, AZ (October 15, 2018) – Nearly 430 schoolchildren from Fort Mohave, Young Scholars, Montessori Preparatory, Topock and Desert Star Academy schools toured Valley View Medical Center today to learn about the hospital. Each child received a backpack with a teddy bear, stethoscope, and coloring book to help them through their hospital journey.
Stops along the tour included education stations in the Emergency Room, Lab, and Imaging departments. In addition to learning about the healthy snack options, the students recharged to snack on apples, courtesy of VVMC Dietary Services.
The children also learned important lessons on safety as well. The Pharmacy department had a display showing how similar candy and medications look when they are out of their respective packages.
The Teddy Bear Clinic began a number of years ago at Valley View Medical Center. Feliciano Jiron, CEO, and his wife Johanna, an educator with Laughlin School District, implemented the program as a way to help schoolchildren understand hospitals aren’t as scary as they look on television. The entire Jiron family joins in the educational fun. All four of their children, Maximus, McKenzie, Nieve, and Gunnar, play very important roles in the continued success of the program.

“This event is a way our entire family gives back to the community,” Jiron said. “We started it where we came from and it grew quickly. So when we arrived to Fort Mohave, we knew we wanted to start the program here in the community.
“We also have had great partners in Classic Air and Fort Mohave Fire Department. Plus almost 30 volunteers from the Laughlin High School Student Council, and the Mohave County Multiple Avenues for Successful Healthcare (MASH) volunteers.”
Classic Air donated the teddy bears given away and provided tours of their helicopter stationed at Valley View Medical Center. Fort Mohave Fire Department toured children through their ambulance while at VVMC.
The highlight of everyone’s day was a visit from a special guest, Dr. Teddy Bear.
“We really wanted the kids to see that hospitals help patients and their families,” said Dr. Bear. “We also teach the kids ways to be safe and healthy.”
Tours through the facility were led by the high school students while being escorted by 126 parental chaperones.
