MCSO K-9 TRAINING, STUDENT ASSEMBLIES SEND MESSAGE AT RVHS

MOHAVE VALLEY – Four super sniffers were busy at work as Mohave County Sheriff K-9 officers and their human partners had on-going training at River Valley High School.  In addition to the exercise, deputies and the dogs also presented student assemblies to talk about the K-9 program and discuss Arizona’s recently-passed Proposition 207, the legalization of recreational marijuana for adults.
“The kids had great questions and were excited to see them in action,” said RVHS vice principal Deann Osuna.
Deputies and the K-9s also visited with students in a classroom at CRUHSD Academy, the non-traditional high school currently located on the RVHS campus.
During the assemblies, deputies showed how each dog is trained to search and find contraband, and attack anyone endangering their human partner.  The dogs are normally docile when at home or off-duty, but are protective and on high alert when working.
MCSO has previously used the RVHS campus for training after hours.   Deputies and K-9 officers have periodically been called into service at schools throughout the department’s River District, when requested.
Students were reminded that, despite the passage of Prop. 207, marijuana and other drugs remain illegal on school campuses and at school activities for both students and adults.
Attending the RVHS training and assemblies were MCSO Sergeants Kelly McCool and John Wilson, and Deputies Kevin Gunnoe and Shawn McCleary, along with their respective partners Chase, Doc, Bruno and Grimm.
MCSO’s K-9 program is supported by public donations and a non-profit organization.
