Free COVID-19 Testing Set in Sandy Valley June 13
Testing at UNLV Tropicana Garage Site Offered Tuesday-Saturday
Clark County, in collaboration with the Southern Nevada Health District and Community Ambulance, will offer free COVID-19 testing for residents of Sandy Valley and Goodsprings on Saturday, June 13, 9 a.m. to noon at the Sandy Valley Community Center, 650 W. Quartz Ave.
No appointment is needed for Saturday’s testing in Sandy Valley. The walk-up site will have about 200 self-administered nasal swab tests available on a first-come, first-served basis. Testing is open to anyone, including children. Patients are asked to wear face coverings, and to bring identification and provide their phone numbers. All results, positive or negative, are reported to the Health District. Patients will receive results by phone within a week.
“It’s important for as many of our residents as possible to be tested for COVID-19 so we can get an accurate picture of how widespread the virus is in Southern Nevada,” said Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones, whose Commission District includes Sandy Valley and Goodsprings. “Without a vaccine, the virus will continue to present a public health threat that we need to stay on top of. The data gathered from testing will help us respond quickly to any cases that emerge.”
Clark County, the Southern Nevada Health District and other community partners are working to offer a variety of COVID-19 testing options to the public. A calendar listing COVID-19 testing events sponsored by the Health District is posted on its website at https://www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org/covid-19-testing-sites. The state of Nevada also is offering a COVID-19 test finding locator tool on its website at www.healthresponse.nv.gov.
Additionally, COVID-19 testing is available in the Las Vegas Valley at the UNLV Tropicana parking garage five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The site is located next to UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center off University Drive and Tropicana Avenue. Since opening on May 27, a total of 8,645 tests have been conducted. The site offers drive-thru testing and a walk-up testing area for pedestrians and is being operated by Clark County and UMC in partnership with the Nevada National Guard. There are no out-of-pocket costs to patients. The site is open to anyone, whether exhibiting symptoms of the virus or not. Patients are asked to schedule appointments online through UMC’s website by visiting www.umcsn.com, clicking on the “UMC COVID-19 Testing Center” banner and selecting the “Public” option from the drop-down menu. As much as possible, patients are asked to use the online, self-scheduling option. Those with no online access or limited access may call UMC at (702) 383-2619 to schedule an appointment. While appointments are highly recommended, the site has a separate check-in process to accommodate some patients, as staffing permits, who arrive without appointments and want to undergo drive-thru or walk-up testing.
The type of testing available at the UNLV Tropicana parking garage site is polymerase chain reaction tests, better known as PCR tests, which show whether someone currently has COVID-19. Upon booking appointments, patients receive information about how to access test results electronically. UMConnect, UMC’s patient portal, offers a MyChart app and website at https://umconnect.umcsn.com/. Results are typically available within 48 hours.
Officials say as Nevada’s economy reopens in phases, the public’s cooperation in limiting the spread of COVID-19 continues to be important for community health. Recommended actions include social distancing and wearing face coverings in public places, washing hands and practicing good cough and sneeze hygiene, and limiting your contact with others if you test positive for the virus or someone in your immediate household does. Patients with questions about the virus are encouraged to contact their medical provider for guidance.
