ELIGIBLE DONORS ENCOURAGED TO GIVE BLOOD TO AVOID A SHORTAGE IN COMMUNITY SUPPLY

All Blood Types in Urgent Need, Especially the “O”

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Mar. 1, 2024) – Every two seconds, someone needs blood. This could be the person in a severe car crash, rushed to the hospital. It could be a child or adult with cancer and fighting for survival. It could even be someone born with a blood disorder, making regular transfusions vital to stay healthy. It might even be you, one day, a friend, close relative, or other loved one in your life in need of blood. Whoever it is, your donation helps save and improve a life.

Southern Nevada has continued to see fewer donors since the pandemic. Fewer businesses are available to hold blood drives, as well. While our community continues to rebound, Vitalant encourages anyone eligible to donate. All blood types remain in urgent need, with emphasis on the O bloody types. O-positive is the most common type compatible with other positive blood types. O-negative is universal and able to help anyone with any blood type. Since Type O blood is most frequently transfused, it is often in greater need.

With March being Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month, this is a reminder that regular donations also support patients who have inherited disorders that prevent the blood from clotting properly. Von Willebrand disease is the most common bleeding disorder in the U.S., affecting approximately 3 million people. And, regarding hemophilia, 400 babies are born with the disorder each year. As added incentive, all who donate with Vitalant between March 3-16 will receive an email to claim free solar eclipse glasses and an exclusive T-shirt (while supplies last), to celebrate the April solar eclipse.  Also, from March 3 – 31, donors will automatically be entered to win one of four (4) $5,000 gift card as part of the Celestial Giveaway promotion.  Later in the month, anyone who donates March 29 – 31 will receive an “egg-straordinary” gift, a $20 gift card of choice when they opt-in to Donor Rewards.
