DUCK RACE RETURNS TO RIVER, BENEFITS RIVER FUND
BULLHEAD CITY – Thousands of ducks will float down the Colorado River in April, but it’s not part of a flying feathered seasonal migration. Little yellow rubber duckies will kick off the first “Great Duck Derby” for River Fund, one of the Tri-State area’s premier emergency assistance non-profit organizations.
It is a return of popular duck races to the Bullhead City-Laughlin area. On April 15, numbered ducks will launch at 10:00 a.m. from a designated spot upstream and float south to Bullhead City’s Community Park. Prizes will be awarded for the first 25 ducks to arrive, as well as a special prize for the last one.
“We’re calling it a ‘fun-raiser,’” said River Fund president and CEO Mike Conner. “We want everyone to have a quackin’ good time while they’re helping their friends and neighbors facing a variety of crises.”
The Great Duck Derby will coincide with the Mohave Community College Foundation’s “Food Truck Friendzy” at Community Park, which runs from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Duck Derby prizes include $2,000 for the first arrival, $1,000 for the second and $500 for the third. The “last waddler” in will receive $250. Prizes also include gift certificates and gift cards.
Duck tickets are $10 each, with discounts for multiple purchases. A “six quack” is $50, a “quacker’s dozen” (13) is $100, and a “dam flock” (25) is $200.
Tickets are available online at https://riverfundinc.com/, from any River Fund board member, the River Fund offices in Laughlin (55 Civic Way) and Bullhead City (1343 Hancock Road), or the Bullhead Area or Laughlin Chambers of Commerce.
Area school children have also been invited to submit coloring contest entries showing ducks either having fun or helping people. Each public and charter school has been invited to have students from kindergarten to the sixth grade enter the free contest. Schools include those in Bullhead City, Ft. Mohave, Laughlin, Mohave Valley, Needles and Topock.
Winners for the Duck Derby and the coloring contest will be announced on April 15, but do not have to be present to win.
The Duck Derby has been coordinated with local authorities. Floating ducks will be monitored and herded to avoid going astray.
River Fund has impacted more than 75,000 lives with immediate emergency crisis and hardship assistance totaling more than $3.7 million since opening its doors in 2010. Utility assistance is River Fund’s top request. Other basic needs include rent money, food, temporary shelter, medical and pharmaceutical needs, vehicle repairs, and similar issues, resulting in many requests. Major problems such as homelessness, domestic violence, cancer, memory loss, veterans assistance, and disaster assistance caused by COVID-19 and its related economic downturn also remain top priorities at River Fund.
