‘Cultures of Las Vegas: The Native Americans’
Plays Throughout November
Show Coincides with Native American Heritage Month
Local Native Americans will be the focus on the next iteration of the popular “Cultures of Las Vegas” television series when it debuts today. It airs at 8 p.m.
“Cultures of Las Vegas: The Native Americans” will air on Clark County Television (CCTV) throughout November, which is Native American Heritage Month. Guest moderated by KSNV Channel 3’s Max Darrow, the show features Rulon Pete, executive director of the Las Vegas Indian Center; Barbara Hartzell, chairwoman of the Las Vegas Indian Center Board of Directors; Dr. Crystal Lee, United Natives founder & a UNLV alumnus; Tammi Tiger, founding member of the UNLV Native American Alumni Club and lead over the Indian Center's civic engagement program; and UNLV student Annika Roseen, who was recently crowned Ms. Native UNLV 2020-2021 on the first celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Clark County.
The Native Americans indigenous to Clark County are the Southern Paiute (“Nuwu”), federally recognized as the Las Vegas Paiute and Moapa Band of Paiutes. In all, Nevada is home to 27 tribal communities who also include the Northern Paiute (“Numu”), the Washoe (“Wa She Shu”), and the Western Shoshone (“Newe”) peoples. According to the last Census, Clark County is home to more than 50,000 "urban natives" from tribes all across the United States and one of our fastest growing populations in recent years.
“We have such a wonderfully diverse and vibrant community here in Southern Nevada that I’m grateful to be a part of,” Darrow said. “It was a pleasure to host the show, and to meet some incredibly friendly people in our community who also call the Valley home.”
Darrow has been reporting for KSNV Channel 3 since August 2018 and previously worked for television station KGUN 9 in Tucson, Arizona, where he was a reporter and fill-in anchor. Darrow, who is originally from California’s Bay area, is graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
