Clark County Commission Chairman Marilyn Kirkpatrick and the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office are hosting a higher education savings plan information session at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the Clark County Government Center to teach people how to invest for their children’s futures through a variety of 529 savings plans.

The workshop will be held in County Commission Chambers on the first floor of the Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Pkwy. Doors open at 5 p.m. The information session will begin at 6 p.m. Computers and assistance will be available at the event to help people prepare for their children’s futures by opening up savings plans available through the state of Nevada to help pay for higher education and other endeavors. Participants who open a SSGA Upromise 529 account at the event, one type of college savings plan, for their child will be eligible to participate in a free raffle.

“Whether a young person wants to go to college or a trade school, there are savings plans available to help you invest in your child or grandchild’s future,” said Commissioner Kirkpatrick. “Every family has different needs, and this workshop will give you a great overview of the many types of savings plan options that are available.”

Five raffle winners will receive a $529 deposit into their SSGA  plans, and 25 winners will receive $100 contributions. All participants who open up SSGA accounts on site will receive a $15 start-up contribution. To learn more and to open an SSGA Upromise 529 Account, please visit Nevadas529.com. Another program to be discussed is the Nevada College Kick Start Program, which establishes a college savings account for all public-school kindergarten students in Nevada with a $50 contribution.
