BCSD RESPONSE TO TIK TOK VANDALISM CHALLENGE: STUDENTS MAY BE PROSECUTED
Bullhead City School District is advising students and parents that a current social media challenge leading to school vandalism and theft will not be tolerated and could lead to arrest. The so-called “Devious Lick Challenge” on the social media app TikTok encourages individuals to vandalize and steal school property. Theft and vandalism are being glamorized, and students film themselves engaging in these acts to post on various social media sites.
“This viral trend is here, has already involved students at both Bullhead City Middle School and Fox Creek Junior High School,” said Supt. Carolyn Stewart. “School buildings are meant to be a safe and clean space for our students and staff. Bullhead City School District will not tolerate the destruction or theft of school property.
For schools to make repairs and replace these items is very costly and takes precious time away from other priorities. There will be consequences for students who choose to engage in this behavior, including involvement of law enforcement, according to BCSD.
“Bullhead City School District has worked hard in recent years to build a positive culture, one where students feel part of their school community, taking care of each other and school campuses and behaving responsibly,” Stewart added.
Principals are doing their best to identify the students who are committing these acts but need the help of parents and staff. Parents can help by discussing with their children the importance of and their expectations for responsible behavior. Parents can emphasize that what students think is a challenge is actually criminal behavior, not an innocent prank. Parents and community members who have information they can share that will help the district stop further destruction should contact principals at the school sites.
