BCSD BOARD SELECTS ZARZYCKI
TO FILL VACANCY
The Bullhead City School District (BCSD) governing board is unanimously recommending long-time resident and retired educator Barbara Zarzycki to fill a school board vacancy created by the pending resignation of member Anna Boyd, who will step down December 31.
A formal appointment will then be made by Mohave County School Superintendent Mike File. Under state law, File has the right to accept or reject a board’s recommendation, or unilaterally name his own appointee.
Zarzycki is a retired junior high school teacher. She taught for 20 years at both Bullhead City and Fox Creek Junior High Schools and another five years in the Mohave Valley Elementary School District. She has also been an associate faculty member on Mohave Community College’s Bullhead City campus for more than 20 years. Zarzycki is also active in the Colorado River Women’s Council. She moved to Bullhead City in 1978.
Boyd, a math teacher at Mohave High School, is moving outside the BCSD boundaries. That will make her ineligible to finish her term, which expires at the end of 2024.
Outgoing BCSD board president Kory Burgess described Zarzycki as an “amazing lady” and said “we couldn’t ask for a better candidate.” Board member Amanda Amann noted that she was one of Zarzycki’s junior high students.
“I will be comfortable with her taking my seat,” Boyd told fellow board members.
In addition to Zarzycki, former BCSD teacher Bill Earnest applied for the opening, but did not attend the board meeting.
School board members are responsible for setting policies and goals, reviewing and approving budgets, and hiring and evaluating the superintendent. They do not receive a salary for monthly meetings, periodic student disciplinary or personnel hearings, or workshops.
Bullhead City School District traces its history more than 75 years, and now has six schools serving students pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
