Summer Food Rocks! Food That’s In When School is Out!

The Colorado River Food Bank and the Nevada Department of Agriculture are once again presenting the Summer Food Service Program in Laughlin.  This USDA program provides free meals for kids 18 years and under.

In its fourth year of operation in Laughlin, the program will begin on June 6, 2016 and run through August 26, 2016.  The program is now being expanded to be available in three locations in Laughlin, plus our newest location in Searchlight.  All Laughlin sites that participated last year (Riverwood Village Apartments, Vista Creek Apartments, and the Spirit Mountain Activity Center operated by Clark County Parks and Recreation Department) have agreed to be returning distribution sites for 2016.  Our new site for 2016 in Searchlight will take place at the Searchlight Community Center. All sites offer supervised food distribution in common areas available to all children who come to the facility, regardless of where the child lives. In order to participate in the program, children must arrive at one of the distribution sites during the distribution hours and must consume the meals at that distribution site. There are no income restrictions for the families of the participants in the program; all children are eligible. Riverwood Village Apartments is located at 1705 Cal Edison Drive, Vista Creek Apartments is located at 2220 Cougar Drive, and Spirit Mountain Activity Center is located at 1975 Arie Avenue in Laughlin. The meals will be served from 11:00am to 11:45am every day Monday through Friday.  Our new Searchlight location will take place at the Searchlight Community Center, located at 200 Michael Wendell Way.  Meals at the Searchlight site will be served from 11:00am to 11:45am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only.

A typical lunch box will consist of one of a variety of pre-packaged lunch boxes which contain all the basic food groups and has been approved by the Department of Agriculture. Generally, the meals will include items such as fruit cups or apple sauce, chocolate milk, beef and/or cheese sticks, raisins, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, sunflower seeds, and chicken salad. There will be a greater selection of pre-packaged meals this year, which will be alternated as much as possible to give as wide of a variety as possible to the children participating.

Paul Stubler, Executive Director of the Colorado River Food Bank commented on the program, “this SFSP program gives us the opportunity to feed the local kids when they are out of school, and they are able to participate in their local neighborhoods. We are very excited about adding a fourth site this year at Searchlight Community Center, and we want to thank all of our site managers and their staffs for committing the time and effort necessary to supervise the programs at their locations.”
